Start as you mean to go on
The easiest time to set up good bookkeeping is right at the beginning. A few hours of help at the start can save you days of stress later – and many of the most expensive mistakes I see come from the first year of trading.
What we’ll cover
In one or two relaxed sessions we’ll get you registered, choose software or a simple system that suits you, and set up a business bank account and a routine for receipts and invoices. I’ll explain what you can and can’t claim, how payments on account work and how Making Tax Digital could affect you as your business grows.
Ongoing help if you want it
Some new businesses are happy to do their own books once they’re set up; others prefer to hand it over from day one. Either is fine. I can check in quarterly, handle your year-end, or take over completely as you grow.
Support in East Dorset
There’s plenty of help for new businesses locally, from free business support services run through the councils to friendly networking groups in Ferndown, Wimborne, Poole and Bournemouth. I’m happy to point you in the right direction.
Start-up support: frequently asked questions
Should I be a sole trader or a limited company?
It depends on your expected profits, your plans and your personal circumstances. I’ll explain the practical differences and, for the tax side of the decision, introduce you to an accountant who can advise properly.
When do I need to register with HMRC?
If you become self-employed, you must register for self assessment by 5 October after the end of the tax year in which you started. It’s best to do it as soon as you start trading.
How much should I put aside for tax?
It varies, but I’ll give you a simple personalised percentage based on your expected profit, so the tax bill never comes as a shock.
