Take the January stress away
Most people put their tax return off because it feels complicated – and then it’s 30 January. I’ll gather what’s needed, prepare the return, talk you through the result and file it once you’re happy. Ideally, we’ll have it done by the autumn so you know your tax bill months in advance.
Who needs to file?
You usually need to file a return if you are:
- Self-employed with income over £1,000 in a tax year
- A landlord receiving rent (including a room in your home above the Rent a Room limit)
- A company director taking dividends
- Earning untaxed income such as foreign income or significant savings interest
- Affected by the High Income Child Benefit Charge
Local knowledge helps
Across East Dorset I see a lot of people with more than one income: an employed job plus a trade on the side, a pension plus a holiday let near the New Forest, or a small rental portfolio in Bournemouth and Poole. Getting the detail right – and claiming everything you’re entitled to – makes a real difference to the final bill.
Payments on account explained
If your tax bill is over £1,000, HMRC normally asks for advance payments towards next year on 31 January and 31 July. It catches many people out in their second year of trading. I’ll explain exactly what’s coming so you can plan for it.
Self assessment: frequently asked questions
How much does a self assessment tax return cost?
£150 per tax return, with no VAT to add. If you’re in Making Tax Digital, my £31-a-month MTD plan includes your final declaration.
When is the self assessment deadline?
Online returns are due by 31 January after the end of the tax year, and any tax owed must be paid by the same date. The 2025–26 return is due by 31 January 2027.
What if I file late?
There’s an automatic £100 penalty for missing the deadline, even if you owe no tax, with further penalties after three, six and twelve months, plus interest on late payment.
I’m now in MTD for Income Tax. Do I still file a return?
Yes, but it becomes a “final declaration” submitted through your MTD software, following your four quarterly updates. I can handle the whole process.
